Downtown Dallas had a lot of these huge, deep holes fenced off except for "viewing sites". You walked along the sidewalk and then up on these wooden, long, aisles that kept one safe from the ongoing digging, clanging and banging, going on down deep in the ground, like 50 feet or more.
During the Summer's, I would ride the bus to town with my Father who worked in the Magnolia building, 25th floor. I would ask if I could stop and watch, and he would say "yes, watch awhile and come on up later".
There was an old man in a wheelchair that had a great lookout place, and I would stand next to him seated, and watch all the machinery, men, cranes, steel girders, down deep in this huge pit, doing their work.
Mesmerized me for hours, and I can still to this day, see it all going on, and I'm 72 now.
Wonder if they still let people watch today? OSHA laws and lawsuits and all.

I was hiking yesterday at the Spring Creek nature area. I was curious about the smaller creek that runs under Routh Parkway. It is always running and cooler temperature than even spring creek, which makes me think it is spring fed. I walked to the West side of where the creek goes under the new parkway. There in the shade of a big sycamore is a small waterfall. Behind it is an old tin roof building, partly collapsed. I would have explored more, but there was a no trespassing sign. Anyone know what that building was?
I think often of what a great place this is, and worry it'll be scraped and paved some day.

It is my non expert observation, that there are now only two houses standing in the area between US75, Ross Ave, and Hall St. (just outside actually). One is boarded up just NE of Hall on Roseland, the other is on Munger just NE of Hall. On the Dallas Central Appraisal District Website, they are listed as having been built in 1914.

There was still one house on Watkins just behind US 75, but unfortunatley that has been razed circ June this year. DCAD still shows it, as having built in 1910.

Is there any interest at all in these houses being preserved?

I have tried reporting them (even doing it several times for just one post) hoping that would fill up the admins mailbox. But it's all to no avail.

Sear's and Roebuck On Greenville Ave. (4 replies)

Sure enjoyed those old memories about going to the Sears Store. My family always called it Sear's and Roebuck, and told me the history of it many times.
When growing up, my family always bought the car tires there. We had quite a few cars, and all were on Sear's tires.
When we drove into an open stall, my Father would ask for the battery "quick charge" on the battery, while we shopped.
They offered this service. The mechanic would take out the 6 volt battery, take it into a "charging room", and put it on a rack and hook up the red and black 6 volt leads.
Yes, all cars were 6 volts dc back then. I can still smell that pungent acid smell, and the bubbling sounds, and the small sparks when the 2 charging spikes were placed in the + and - posts. They had a little hammer that they knocked these spikes in tightly.
I memorized it all, as if it was a chemistry experiment.
An hour would go by, and my Mother or Father said it is time to go. A mechanic would appear and take our battery off the rack, re-install it, and start the car. My Father would pay the bill,,,,1.00 dollar.
Many years later in life as a teenager, I became Chape Chapin's expert at 15 year's of age, and ran his battery charging room and service, which was exactly like Sears and Roebuck. Oh, my wages were .75 cents an hour, and it all showed up on my Social Security statement, all of us have when we get SS.
If you like,,,,more later on "Sears" tire failures.

FORD PLANT ON EAST GRAND (19 replies)

A member of one of my car clubs had a question about the old Ford plant in Dallas. I did some research and found a post a few months ago about Jeeps being built there during WW2. But some of my research shows they did make Trucks there up until 1970. My Ford ID # Book List the Dallas assembly plant up to 1970 for the F series and Ranchero. And I found the plant was opened in 1913 and produced model T's until 1924 then a new plant was opened on Grand in 1925 and produced light trucks until 1970. It was closed down and sold to a developer and was turned into what now is City Warehouse which is 1.1 Million Sq Ft. But the original plant was turned into Adams Hat Building, and now is Adams Hats Lofts,at 2700 Canton St. Also if you own an older Ford Truck, if the letter D shows up in the VIN in the first set of #s it may have been built in Dallas. I have a 1970 Ranchero and it's ID # is R for San Jose Ca. " not a Texas Truck". But the Trucks that were built in the Dallas plant were built for the local market and had a sticker on them that said ( Made in Texas by Texans ). So I just wondered if anybody had any more knowledge of the Ford plants in Dallas?

No, we were told, that was in Dallas, either on Oak Lawn or in the Oak Lawn area. Does anyone remember that? I had an aunt and uncle who lived in that area from 1945. We visited quite a bit, ate out fairly often, but I have no memory or it.
