Athens Strip on Greenville Ave

I was watching a B movie the other night that was filmed mainly in Dallas, called ( Mars Needs Women) And one of the places the Martians went looking for women was Athens Strip on Greenville Ave. My question is, where exactly was it located on Greenville Ave. if in fact it actually was on Greenville Ave. ? And when was Athens Strip in operation. The movie was made in 1967 so obviously it was operating then. Other landmarks in the movie were the downtown Dallas Skyline, Love Field, SMU Campus, and they had their spaceship parked at the Whiterock Lake Fish Hatchery.

Wow, the Athens Strip, a topic of conversation among us elementary school boys at Robert E. Lee. I don't remember its exact location, but it was on the west side of Greenville Ave. I do remember that they had a display case on the front of the building, with B&W publicity photos of whatever dancers were working there. I would ride by on my bicycle (during the day, when they were closed) and check out the photos. Hubba hubba!

The IMDb shows filming locations for Mars Needs Women being Fair Park, SMU, White Rock Lake, and Houston(?). Also, the credits list "Neil Fletcher" as the Secretary of Defense. Was that Neil Fletcher as in Fletcher's Corny Dogs?

The Athens Strip was located at 2121 Greenville and is currently "New Big Wong" Chinese restaurant.
As to dates of operation, it appears that it opened in 1966 and was still open in '77 when an arson fire damaged the 'facility.'

It is strange that Batgirl was in this movie at the same time that Batman (TV show) was being filmed.

Yep, that's it. When I look at Google Street view, it definitely looks familiar. Another question - the location across the street, where the 7-Eleven is - isn't that were Mitchell's Barbecue was located?

Neil Fletcher and his brother Carl were entertainers whose creation, the corny dog, considerably overshadowed their career in show biz. Neil appeared in bit parts in a number of movies shot in this area.

I seem to remember the Athens Strip being located, in the late 60s and early 70s, in the strip shopping center on the Southeast corner of Greenville and University...............or was that another strip club or were there two of them? :-)

The strip club that was at Greenville Ave. and University was "The Fare". I spent many hours in there playing pool (really) in the late 70s.A friend of mine dated a dancer there. And now that you mention Athens Strip being where the New Big Wong is,I do remember it now. Thanks for the response!

I only got to see a couple of minutes of it, but Mars Needs Women was on again last night, on Channel 8.3 ("THIS"winking smiley. The scene I saw looked like it was shot on the SMU campus. I was amazed at the quality of the picture, so I'm guessing that the the film has been restored somewhere along the way.
