Old Dallas Athletic Club building downtown

Does anyone have any pictures or memories of the old DAC building downtown? My grandparents lived there and I wish I had pictures of the inside and outside. I loved visiting them there. It was a really wonderful, old building. I think it was demolised in the late seventies. Granddaddy practiced law right next door, so he would just walk to work. He parked his car in an old parking garage downtown wher ethey'd ride up and down on this pulley thing. Granddaddy also owned the Cipango on Turtle Creek for decades. I have lots of nice memories of these places, but would like some photos or any memories of these places you might have. Thanks.

Visited briefly as a youngster a couple of times...
There is an article in the Dallas Morning News Archives on May 22, 1960 with a couple of pictures and detail on the ornate interior.

Thanks also for the postcard picture. It was lovely inside to me as a child in the sixties. My brothers and I sure loved to go there.

the photos are kind of depressing as they were preparing the building for implosion
but otherwise pretty cool in a weird sort of way confused smiley

and then there was the implosion...

Wasn't that about 1978 or something? I remember my mother telling me and I didn't care at the time, but now that I'm old, I do! It was lots of fun to play in that building as kids. There was a huge indoor pool in the basement. We loved that and everything else about the place.

A lot of people never connected the two but DAC still has a country club in Mesquite on La Prada. It was formerly on Walnut Hill east of Central.

Thanks for the information. I will contact them, perhaps they have some old pictures of the old DAC downtown. My grandparents lived there for many years and I only wish I had more pictures of the place as it once was.

I do have a question about some old post cards...
What we are looking at here is the DAC, corner of Elm (left) and St. Paul (right)

but what about THIS?

Just a guess...

I agree with the Elm / St Paul looking NW...

Years ago, Live Oak extended diagonally from St Paul to Ervay and is no longer there, eliminated when the DAC was demolished and current bank was built on the property.

Theoretically, this could be a view from somewhere near Live Oak and Ervay looking east at the rear of the building with peculiar artistic license. There were small buildings at the time at this location, a dang good question! Based on the front facade of the DAC, this angle would be the only possibility.

Also note that there were not smaller buildings at the left and right as depicted. The DAC fronted Live Oak, St Paul and Elm.

must got to be some peculiar artistic license
have seen that card before and it has always baffled me

BTW, the photo I did post was of the entrance to what used to been a barber shop
The picture is of the Live Oak side of the building

I really need to find and scan my old photographs...

The building on top is not the DAC building from any angle. That block makes a triangler down to Ervay and there is more than a half of a block between the DAC and Ervay. It is similar in design to the Records building but still different. I have look through my books and could not fine it.
Maybe M C can come up with which building it is.

The building on the top looks a lot like the DAC, perhaps without some of the gee-gaws,
it is the building on the bottom that does not fit at all, from any angle.

BTW, last night I dug out my old photos, just got to scan a few...
